Prayer Time

The e-muezzin is a program used to know the prayer times for the five daily obligatory prayers, and the program also includes a machine to determine the Qiblah direction.

There are different types of this program depending on the companies producing it, and the difference is in the services provided by the program, these programs vary in terms of the inclusion of a large number of cities whose time of the five daily prayers have been appointed, hence, some of these programs contain a large number of cities, while the other includes a limited number Of cities, and some programs allow the user to add a new city of the world, by entering latitude and longitude according to the map of the world, and determine the difference by GMT, and then the program automatically determine the times of prayer for that city.

These programs differ in terms of accuracy and inaccuracy in determining the times of prayers according to the programming used in the preparation of the program, according to the calendar that was relied upon, and according to the accuracy in determining the latitude and longitude for each city of the world.

Among the uniqueness of the program is that when entering the time of each prayer, as well as iqama (start of prayer), it is according to the user's definition of the interval between the adhaan and the Iqama.

This program can be connected to the amplifying device in the mosque, and thus the program does the calling of the prayer (Athan) at the entry of the time (of prayer), and with  the voice of the most famous callers to prayer in the Islamic world

The program also contains a Hijri calendar, which can be modified manually if the legitimate vision of the Hijri calendar increase by day or decrease by day.

Recently, types of adhaan programs have emerged to suit mobile phones, and they are many and varied, and the suitable one can be chosen

Example of the Muezzin Program:

The website of the Islamic researcher in the Internet produced a   program for Athan which is version 3.0. It is possible to hear the adhaan automatically when the time of the prayer is due, in addition to many features and characteristics

Characteristics of this program:

Launching the adhaan automatically at all times of prayer.1

This program includes the Gregorian and Hijri calendar.4

    14. The program includes two copies, one free and the other with a moving fee due to its additional features.

One of the main advantages of this program are; knowing the entry of the times of the obligatory prayers, and knowing the direction of the Qibla, and from that also is knowing the entry of the time of Maghrib and dawn in Ramadan fast.

Is it permissible to rely on the program for determining the time of prayer, and in case it is permissible what are the controls and measures that must be taken into consideration?

In view of the issue of relying on the calendar to know the entry of prayer times, it can be said that such programs may be relied on to know the entry of prayer time, and breaking the fast and knowing when to stop eating at dawn in the month of Ramadan. It is also allowed to depend on the program in determining the direction of the Qibla, however, the permission here is restricted with the following measures:

First measure

The program must be issued by a company that is well known and trusted by the people with the strength of its technology and its capabilities in preparing the program. Therefore, the program should be properly evaluated in accordance with the known calendars that are in circulation among the people

second measure

the user should ensure that the program is properly installed on the computer in an accurate manner.

The third measure

Since the program depends on the date in the computer, the user must make verify the authenticity of the history of the computer of the machine and whether it complies with a printed calendar, Umm al-Qura, calendar for example.

Fourth measure:

The user should improve his use of the program in terms of determining the Hanafi, or Shafei schools of thought and determine the winter and summer timings and determine the differences between the adhaan and iqama and other settings required

The fifth measure

The user should ensure that the program is working correctly, by experimenting and matching his time on the printed calendar Umm Al-Qura calendar, for example.

Sixth measure:

In order to know the direction of the qibla, it should be tested and compared to other means and machines such as the known compass. In the form of non-variation, it may be used later to know Qibla direction on land or outside the city or while traveling in the absence of mosques or other reliable evidence if the program is installed on the laptop.

Making the program a muezzin in the mosque, such as making it call adhaan when it is time for a prayer  and making it announce the adhaan in the microphones, and hence, making it a compliment of the Muazzin. What I see from this is that it is not permissible. this is because, the muezzin, as understood from the shar'i texts, must be a matured and reasonable person who will call adhaan by his will when the time of the prayer is due. Again, the adhaan is one of the manifested rites of Islam, hence, if people had changed their adhaan to these programs, they would have sinned altogether.

The Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has declared that it is not permissible to use recorded adhaan machines for calling the Adhaan.
