The fifth issue: Supererogatory acts of Wudhu':

There are deeds which are recommended when performing the ablution and the person who applies them while performing ablution is rewarded, while whoever leaves them, has no sins for that. These acts are known as Sunanul-Wudhu'(supererogatory acts of Ablution). They are as follows;

1. Mentioning the Name of Allah at the beginning of the ablution, because of the saying of the prophet(peace be upon him):

[لا وضوء لمن لم يذكر اسم الله عليه].

[There is no Wudhu for one who does not mention the Name of Allah upon performing it](Recorded by Ahmad 3/424, and Abu Dawood: 175).

2. The use of Siwaak, because of the saying of the prophet(peace be upon him):

[لولا أن أشق على أمتي لأمرتهم بالسواك مع كل وضوء].

[Were it not for the fact that I did not want to make things too hard for my Ummah, I would have commanded them to use the siwaak at every time of ablution]. (Recorded by Ahmad 2/418, Abu Dawood: 101, and Al-Haakim 1/147).

3. Washing the Hands three times at the beginning of the ablution, due to the fact that the prophet(peace be upon him) used to wash his noble hands three times as it was narrated in the description of his ablution.

4. Intensive rinsing of mouth and sniffing up water into the nostril, except for someone fasting. It is narrated in the description of the ablution of the prophet(peace be upon him) that he rinsed his mouth and sniffed up water into his nostrils, and because of his saying(peace be upon him) that:

[وبالغ في الاستنشاق إلا أن تكون صائماً].

[You should sniff up water into your nostrils intensively, unless you are fasting]. (Recorded by Abu Dawood: 142, and Nasaai 1/66).

5. Rubbing of the face, and pickling of the thin beard with water until water reaches its bottom, due to the act of the prophet(peace be upon him). He (peace be upon him) used to wash his arms when he(peace be upon him) performs ablution). (Recorded by Ibn Hibban  3/363,  Bayhaqi 1/196, and Al-Haakim 1/243). And also he (peace be upon him) used to take water and entering it bellow his chin and rubbing it through his beard. (Recorded by Abu Dawood: 145).

6. Washing of right hands and legs before the left, because the prophet(peace be upon him) used to do like that, because ‘Aisha(may Allah be pleased with her reported that:

[كان يحب التيامن في تنعله وترجله وطهوره وفي شأنه كله].

[He used to prefer to start with the right side (over the left) when putting on his slippers, combing his hair, ritual purification, and in all his matters). (Recorded by Al-Bukhari 168, and Muslim, 226).

7. Washing of the face, the hands and the legs three times. Washing it one time is compulsory, but three times is recommended  as evident in the prophet's(peace be upon him) example. It has been proved that he(peace be upon him):

[أنه توضأ مرة مرة ومرتين مرتين وثلاثاً ثلاثاً].

[He performed ablution by washing the body parts one time, two times, and three times]. (Recorded by Al-Bukhari; 157, 158, 159, and Muslim; 226).

8. Mentioning of the narrated Dua after ablution, because of the saying of the prophet(peace be upon him) that:

[ما منكم أحد يتوضأ فيسبغ الوضوء ثم يقول: أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له، وأشهد أن محمداً عبده ورسوله، إلا فتحت له أبواب الجنة الثمانية، يدخل من أيها شاء}.

[Whoever performs ablution among you in the best manner and then says, ‘I testify that there is no God but Allah alone He has no partners, and I testify that Muhammad is his servant and his messenger, unless the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him and he may enter through any gate he wishes]. (Recorded by Muslim; 234). Imam At-Tirmidhi increased in his narration that “he says together with the above Dua " O Allah, make me among those who repent and make me among those who purify themselves.”
