The third issueHow to wipe over the Khuff, and Its description.

The legislated area to be wiped over is the upper part of the Khuff, and what is compulsory in that is what could be named wiping. And how to wipe over the Khuff is to wipe most of the upper part of it, because of the Hadith narrated on the authority of Al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah(may Allah be pleased with him), in which he explained how the prophet(peace be upon him) wipe over his Khuff in ablution. He(may Allah be pleased with him) said:

[رأيت النبي صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يمسح على الخفين: على ظاهرهما].

[I saw the prophet(peace be upon him) wiping over the upper part of his Khuffs]. (Recorded by Tirmidhi, No:98).

It is not sufficient, or recommended to wipe the under part of the Khuff, because of the saying of Ali(may Allah be pleased with him) that:

"لو كان الدين بالرأي لكان أسفل الخف أولى بالمسح من أعلاه", [وقد رأيت النبي صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يمسح على ظاهر خفه].

"If the religion was based on ideology the under part of the khuff would have been better to be wiped”, [but I have seen Allah's messenger(peace be upon him) wiping over the upper part of his khuff]. (Recorded by Abu Dawood/162, and Bayhaqi1/292).

If the upper part and under part are wiped together, it is valid, but it is disliked.

The fourth issue: The permitted period to wipe over the Khuff.

The time limit to wipe over the Khuffayn for the person residing at home and the traveler who is in a journey in which he is not permitted to reduce his prayer, the limited time for them is a day and a night. And three days and their nights for the traveler who is in a journey in which he can reduce his prayer. Because of the Hadith reported on the authority of Ali(may Allah be pleased with him) that:

[جعل رسول الله صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثلاثة أيام ولياليهن للمسافر، ويوماً وليلة للمقيم].

[The Messenger of Allah(peace be upon him) permitted wiping over the Khuff for three days and including their nights for the traveler, and one day and night for the one residing at home]. (Recorded by Muslim:No:85).

The fifth issue: The nullifiers of wiping over the Khuff.

The following are the nullifiers of wiping on the Khuff:

1. If the things that cause “Ghusl”(ritual bathing) occur, then wiping over the Khuff becomes nullified, because of the Hadith reported on the authority of Safwan bin ‘Assal(may Allah be pleased with him) that:

[كان النبي صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يأمرنا إذا كنا سفراً ألا ننزع خفافنا ثلاثة أيام ولياليهن إلا من جنابة].

[the prophet(peace be upon him) used to command us when we were on a journey that we should not take off our Khuffs for three days and three nights except in a case of Janabah(sexual impurity)]. (Recorded by Ahmad:4/229, Nasaee: 1/84, and Tirmidhi: no.:96).

2. If some of the obligatory parts to be washed appear, i.e. appearance of some parts of the foot, the wiping over the Khuff becomes nullified.

3. Taking off the two Khuffs nullifies the wiping, and taking off one of them is like taking off the two in the opinion of the majority scholars.

4. Ending the prescribed time of wiping nullifies the wiping, because wiping over the Khuffs has a specific time laid down by the legislator(Allah, the exalted), so it is not permissible to exceed the prescribed period based on the understanding of the narrated Hadiths on its prescribed time.
