Fasting on the day of Ashura (the 10th day of Muharram).

Question:

What should a Muslim do on the day of 'Ashura? Is Zakat Al-Fitr compulsory on that day?

Answer:

It is Islamically permissible for a Muslim to fast on the day of Ashura based on hadith that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered to fast the day of 'Ashura. When Ramadan was imposed, it became voluntary, whoever wished to fast would fast and whoever wished to break his fast would do so. And Ashura has no Zakat Al-Fitr as it is in Eid Al-Fitr after the month of Ramadan.

To Allah belong all success. May Allah's peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
