The Prayer of Double Reward and the Reasons for that.

In the name of Allah the Beneficent the Merciful. May Allah bestow His peace and blessings upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions. After this;

The prayer is very important in the life of the Muslim. It is the second main pillar of Islam. It is the medium through which the Muslim communicates to his creator. Among the five daily prayers is the 'Asr prayer which is known as the Middle prayer. This prayer is very significant that it has special virtues.

Abu Basrah Al-Ghifari reported that:

[The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led us in the 'Asr prayer at (the place known as) Al-Mukhammas, and then he said: "This prayer was presented to those gone before you, but they neglected it, and he who observes it well has two rewards in store for him. And no prayer is valid after that till the onlooker appears".] (Sahih Muslim 830).

The "onlooker" in the hadith means the evening star.

"Al-Mukhammas" in the hadith is meant by one the valleys. As it was mentioned in another narration that: [The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led us in one of the their valleys which is known as Al-Mukhammas, the 'Asr prayer].

The Jews and Christians were ordered to maintain and observe it well, but they neglected it, so Allah destroyed them. Therefore be careful so that you will not be like them. That's why Allah said in the Qur'an:

{حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَىٰ وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ} (البقرة: 238).

{Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle prayer and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient.} (Al-Baqara: 238).

In the hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mentioned that: "he who observes it well has two rewards". These are:

The first reward: is for maintaining the 'Asr prayer and observing it well. Unlike those who came before us i.e the Jews and Christians.

The second reward: is the reward of performing it just like the remaining prayers, as At-Tayyibi said.

Or maybe the reward of maintaining the 'Asr prayer, and the reward of leaving trade at that time, because 'Asr time was their trading and working hours.

Ibn Hajar said: "A reward due to its virtue, because it is the middle prayer, and a reward for observing and maintaining it. Even though the other prayers have this second reward but that will not affect specifying the two rewards for the 'Asr prayers".

May Allah protect us from his punishments and help us observe and maintain all the prayers and the 'Asr prayers in particular.
