Ruling on the Du'aa of Al-Qunoot.

Question:

What is the ruling on the Du'aa of Al-Qunoot?

Answer:

Du'aa Al-Qunoot has three cases:

The first case: To make Qunoot in Witr prayer, this is desirable; for the hadeeth of Al-Hasan Ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) who said:

[The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught me some words to say in witr in Qunut: "Allahumma ihdini fiman hadayta wa 'afini fiman afayta wa tawallani fiman tawallayta wa barik li fima a'tayta, wa qini sharra ma qadayta, fa innaka taqdi wa la yuqda 'alayk, wa innahu la yadhilluman walayta, tabarakta Rabbana wa at'alayt" (O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided, pardon me among those You have pardoned, turn to me in friendship among those on whom You have turned in friendship, and bless me in what You have bestowed, and save me from the evil of what You have decreed. For verily You decree and none can influence You; and he is not humiliated whom You have befriended. Blessed are You, O Lord, and Exalted.)]. (Sunan an-Nasa'i 1745).

The second case is the qunoot in the case of calamities, whether it is a du'aa for a Muslim nation or a du'aa on an infidel nation. This is a permitted qunoot base on what was reported from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:

[The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made Al-Qunut after Bowing (i.e. Ar-Ruku') for one month, invoking evil upon (the tribes of) Ri'l and Dhakwan. He used to say, "Usaiya disobeyed Allah and His Apostle."]. (Sahih al-Bukhari 4094).

The third case: Qunoot in Fajr prayer always, this is an inovated act, based on the hadith that: Abu Malik Al-Ashjai narrated that:

[I said to my father: 'O my father! You offered Salat behind Allah's Messenger (S), Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali bin Abi Talib here in Al-Kufah for about five years. Did they say the Qunut?' He said: 'It is a newly invented matter my son.'] (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 402).

May Allah grant us success, and may Allah's peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
