It is no hidden fact that friends have enormous influence over one another. That is why it is widely said that "show me your friend and I will tell you whom you are".

Islam as a way of life, a perfectly tailored comprehensive living codes, made it clear the kind of friends one should take and befriend. Any friendship that does not lead to the right guidance of Islam is doomed to fail either out rightly in this world or the world to come. Therefore, the prophet (PBUH) was reported to have said: "A man is (surely) on the path (or way of life) of his friend. So let everyone watch out whom he befriends".

However, Islam has laid down certain principles and regulations to guide to a perfect friendship. And also did it tell us the end and result of any kind of friendship we may chose to belong in this world. Allah says:

???????????????? ???????????????? ?????????? ??????????? ?????? ? ??????????? ?????????????? ???????????? ???? ?????????? ???????????? ?????????? ??????????? ?????????? ???????????? ??????? ??????????? ? ?????????? ?????????????? ??????? ? ????? ??????? ??????? ???????

Meaning: 'And the believers, men and women, are protecting friends of one another, they enjoin the right and forbid the wrong' (At-Taubah: 71).

He said:

Meaning: 'Te believers are naught else than brothers. Therefore make peace between your brethren and observe your duty to Allah that haply ye may obtain mercy' (Al-Hujrat: 10)

He said: {Meaning:} "Bosom friends on that Day will some of them become enemies to themselves save for the God fearing ones" (Al-Zukhruf: 67)

The Prophet (PBUH) said 'The right of a Muslim upon a Muslim are six' It was asked what are they? He replied: ' When you meet him, salute him; when he calls you, respond to him; when he seeks advice , give him advice; when he sneezes and praises Allah, respond to him; when he falls ill, visit him; when he dies, follow him (the funeral)' (Muslim)

He said again elsewhere: 'You will see the believers in their mutual kindness, love and sympathy just like one body. When a limb complains, the whole body responds to it with wakefulness and fever' (Muslim and Bukhari)

He (PBUH) said: "You shall not enter Paradise until you believe; and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not guide you to a thing? Which when done , will make you love one another: Spread the greeting of Salam among you" (Muslim)

He said: "A muslim is a brother to a Muslim: Neither he wrongs him, nor hands him over (to another). And whoso comes in need of his brother , Allah comes in his need ;and whoso removes a calamity of a Muslim, Allah will remove a calamity from the calamities of the Resurrection Day, and whoso conceals the faults of a Muslim, Allah will conceal his sins on the Resurrection Day' (Bukhari and Muslim)

From the mentioned few verses and prophetic sayings above, the kind of friendship called for by Islam is clear. A kind of companionship where people are to collectively cooperate in doing good and strive to fight against evil. A companionship in which companions like for one another what they like for themselves. A union whereby unity is the course. A union that aim at achieving Allah's reward in its union. This is the kind of friendship Islam advocates.

It also made it very clear that, though everyone is free to make the kind of friendship they may want, but the end shall tell. It is only a friendship based on the aforementioned characteristics that will have the final and everlasting bliss in the Hereafter.
