Love is the intention behind most actions and most things, if not everything; we can derive a specific definition of love from Allah’s words in the Holy Qur’an, which comes very close to conveying the meaning of love.  Allah speaks of the great reality of love many times in the Holy Qur’an; let us consider the following Qur'anic verses:

Beautified for men is the love of things they covet; women, children, much of gold and silver (wealth), branded beautiful horses, cattle and well-tilled land. This is the pleasure of the present world's life; but Allah has the excellent return (Paradise with flowing rivers, etc.) with Him. ( Aal ‘Imran, 3:14)

And of mankind are some who take (for worship) others besides Allah as rivals (to Allah). They love them as they love Allah. But those who believe, love Allah more (than anything else). If only, those who do wrong could see, when they will see the torment that all power belongs to Allah and that Allah is Severe in punishment. (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:165)

As in the following verses, Allah – the Almighty - describes love; He says He loves the following:

Those who do good deeds (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:195)

Those who ask Him for forgiveness (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:222)

Those who purify themselves (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:222)

Those who are Allah-fearing (Surah Imrân 3:76)

Those who are steadfast (Surah Imrân 3:146)

Those who trust Him (Surah Imrân 3:159)

Those who act justly (Surah Maida 5:42)

Those who strive for His cause (Surah Saff 61:4)

Those who follow His Prophet (Surah Imrân 3:31)

Allah also says He does not love the following:

The aggressors (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:190)

The disbelievers (Surah Imrân 3:32)

Those who inflict injustice (Surah Imrân 3:57)

Evil (Surah Maida 5:64) and evil doers (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:205)

Those who are arrogant (Surah Nisa 4:36)

Those who spend lavishly (Surah Anaam 6:141)

Then these Qur'anic verses point out to some of love's categories, its causes and reasons:

By no means shall you attain Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, etc., it means here Allah's Reward, i.e. Paradise), unless you spend (in Allah's Cause) of that which you love; and whatever of good you spend, Allah knows it well. (Surah Imrân 3:92)

That is because they loved and preferred the life of this world over that of the Hereafter. And Allah guides not the people who disbelieve. (Surah Nahl 16:107)

6. O you who believe! If a rebellious evil person comes to you with a news, verify it, lest you harm people in ignorance, and afterwards you become regretful to what you have done.

7. And know that, among you there is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessing be upon him). If he were to obey you (i.e. follow your opinions and desires) in much of the matter, you would surely be in trouble, but Allah has endeared the Faith to you and has beautified it in your hearts, and has made disbelief, wickedness and disobedience (to Allah and His Messenger) hateful to you. These! They are the rightly guided ones,

8. (This is) a Grace from Allah and His Favour. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

Say (O Muhammad to mankind): "If you (really) love Allah then follow me (i.e. accept Islamic Monotheism, follow the Qur'an and the Sunnah), Allah will love you and forgive you of your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.". Surah Imrân (3:31)

Do you not love that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Surah Noor 24:22)
