  |      |      |   The Message of Islam:

Orphans are members of our society like every one of us. They deserve, like any other person, care, protection and other basic human rights. Religion, which is God sent divine ideologies and beliefs are to be at the fore front in propagating these values in the societies.

Islam as a religion is so keen on caring for all individuals within the community, in all stages of life. Being a being is the key criterion to deserve all fundamental honors like every other being. The orphan, in his case, has gained much special attention in Islam. It urged all around him to care and protect his wealth, and warned against violating his rights. Numerous verses of the Qur'an and statements of the noble prophet (PBUH) are strong evidences of such attention and care. The history of Islam clearly identifies the amount of care an orphan enjoys within the fold of Islam and its community.

Allah has commanded that the orphan be treated kindly and not to be made to feel any form of inferiority or become useless in the community. He says:

-          "Therefore, treat not the orphan with harshness" (al-Duha: 9)

-          "Have you seen the one who denied the Recompense? For that is the one who drives away the orphan" (Al-Maa'un: 1-2)

He placed clear restrictions and commandments over his wealth. Is must be taken care of with stated conditions and submitted to him as soon as he is mature and can manage them. Allah says:

-          "And do not approach the wealth of an orphan, except in the way that is best, until he reaches maturity. And fulfill every commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever (that about which one will be) asked" (Al-Israa: 34)

-          "Indeed, those who devour the wealth of orphans unjustly are only consuming into their bellies fire and they will burn in Blaze" (An-Nisaa: 10)

The prophet (PBUH) makes the unjust consumption of the wealth of the orphan among the seven great destructive sins as narrated in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah. He also considered catering for him as one of the best of deeds. He said: "Whoever cares for three orphans is like , in reward, one who stands in prayer all night and fasts all day and has his sword ready to fight in the sake of Allah, he and I will be close brothers in Paradise like these two fingers, the index and middle. (Ibn Majah).

This care that Islam offers the orphan gives a great attention for the Muslim community to be cooperative and in harmony, through continuous exhortation to its members to serve each other and relieve of distress of fellow Muslims. This will at the long run bring a comprehensive complete happiness to all in the society.

Just like Islam, Christianity and Judaism also call for the care of orphans. In the Bible, it is said:

-          "Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute" (Psalm 82: 3).

-           "You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child. If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry" (Exodus 22: 22-23)

-          "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world." (James 1: 27)

This clearly means that all the Abrahamic religions have in their books verses calling clearly for care for the orphan.

Although, Islam has the most comprehensive package for the orphan child, yet it is a command God the Almighty has sent down from all past revelations till the last, Islam.
