When Muslim passes by the gathering of both Muslims and polytheists and others, there is nothing bad in saying greeting with the intension of directing the greeting to Muslim. It points to this, the prophet’s the faithful action (peace be upon him).

Usamah Ibn Zayd(may be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passes by the gathering of the mixture of both Muslims and polytheists, and people that worship idol,

and the prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) greeted them and then he stop and descend so he called them to Allah And Read the Quran to them.

An Nawiy said, in this Hadith there is permission to begin greeting with a gathering that comprise Muslim non Muslim and this is the consensus of scholars.

He also said that it is permissible the beginning of saying greeting with the gathering of both Muslim and non Muslims or A pious with intention of directing greeting to the Muslim only.

Ibn Arabi said: Its example is that when one passes by any gathering that contains ahl-sunnah and ahl-bid'ah and in a gathering there is just and unjust and in a gathering of what you love and hate.

And this will not disturb the Hadith that Forbids starting saying greeting to the Non Muslims (the people of scriptures) but here the gathering comprises Muslim for that, it is permissible to say greeting in the gathering of both Muslims and polytheists with the intension of directing it to the Muslims only.

They said to Imam Ahmad may Allah be pleased with him we are dealing with Jews and Christian and we are visiting them in their places and a group of Muslim with them, should we say greet them ? He said Yes, but you have intension of greeting Muslims.

Should we say to the group of Muslim and non believers: “the peace is for those that follow the guidance?

The answer: it is not permissible to say (the peace is for those that follow the guidance) for a group of Muslim and non believers, but rather he will great as it preceded and he will have intension of greeting Muslims and pour this meaning.

Ibn Uthaymeen said if they are Muslims and Christians you greet them with the usual greeting with intension of greeting Muslims only.
