Her name was Arwa bint Abdul Muttalib, grandfather of the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). She was an aunt of the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Her mother was Fatimah bint Amr, who was from the Makhzum clan of the Quraysh tribe and she was born in Makkah.

She first married to Umayr ibn Wahb, by whom she had a son, Tulayb, Who was of the early emigrants. He fought in the battle of badr and was martyred at ajnadin, and left behind no children. He became a Muslim in the house of Al-Arqam and then went to his mother, Arwa to inform about his new religion. His mother, Arwa approved of his support for his cousin Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), saying that if only she were a man, she would take up arms to protect her nephew. Tulayb then asked what prevented her from becoming a Muslim. Arwa made the declaration of faith and spoke out in support of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in Makkah.

Her brother Abu Lahab called on her, saying he was astonished that she had abandoned their father's religion. Arwa replied that she was a Muslim and that she advised Abu Lahab to support their nephew.

Arwa bint Abdul Muttalib on the strength of their unshakable personal faith, used to work for the propagation of Islam. She used to support the Prophet (peace be upon him) and to argue in his favour. She always urged her son to help the Prophet (peace be upon him) and to do whatever he asked him to do.

Arwa joined the general emigration to Medina in 622. May Almighty Allah be pleased with her.
