Breastfeeding is a proven right of the infant, according to the rulings of sharee’ah and the fuqaha’ clearly stated that breastfeeding is the right of the child.  Allah Almighty Commanded in the Holy Qu'an.

"The mothers shall give such to their offspring for two whole years, if the father desires to complete the term". (Q2:233)" From the  verse we can deduce that the total time given for suckling is for two full lunar years(Islamic year). However does this mean that we need to stop nursing at two years? Does this mean that it is Haram to nurse beyond two years?

The Islamic scholars opine different views on this. Some holds that two years is the duration of the nursing, while some others opine that it is allow to nurse for two and a half lunars years and others conclude that it is allow to nurse for more than two years as long as the child is less than seven lunar years of age.

One may deduces from the aforementioned scholars' opinions that, there is no any evidence to prohibit a mother from nursing her child for more that two years, rather two years is the most ideal age to stop.  Ibn Al-Qayyim(may Allah be merciful to him) said in his Tuhfat-ul-Mawdud Fi Ahkam-il-Mawlud that a mother may continue breastfeeding a child after the two years until the half or more of the third year.

Shaykh  Muhammad Salih Al-Munajjid says:" Breastfeeding a child over two years will not have the effect of making him a relative(mahram). It is permitted to breastfeed one's own child  beyond two years, but two years is enough, as Allah says". However, breastfeeding a baby after two years of age may not be beneficial to him in general, so this should be done in case of a need, especially if the child is advance in age.

Finally, Ali, Ibn Abass, Ibn Mos'ood, Abu Hurayrah, Jabir, Ibn Umar Umm Salam, Saeed Ibn Musayyab, Ishaq At-tawree and others(may be pleased with them) are all of the opinion that breastfeeding is not prohibited after two years but, two years is the most ideal age to stop as Allah, the Most exalted, says:

وَالْوَالِدَاتُ يُرْضِعْنَ أَوْلَادَهُنَّ حَوْلَيْنِ كَامِلَيْنِ ۖ لِمَنْ أَرَادَ أَن يُتِمَّ الرَّضَاعَةَ

"The mothers shall give such to their offspring for two whole years, if the father desires to complete the term".

Allah knows best.
