Imam Ash-Shafi'ee was born in Gaza and moved to Makkah when he was two years old. He went to Madinah and was as a student of Imam Malik who was very impressed with this young student. He wrote several books, the most well-known is Kitab-al-Umm containing rulings of the Imam on all subjects of Islamic Law. He is the founder of the Shafi’ee School of thought and one of the great scholars of the saved sect ( Ahlus-Sunna wal-jamaa’a).

What is Uluhiyya (Allah’s Divinity)

Tawheed al-Uluhiyya is to single out Allah (in worship) through the slave's actions, which he performs in order to get closer to Allah in the manner prescribed by the Sharee'ah, like supplication, vow, sacrifice, hope, fear, reliance, love, reverence, and turning in repentance. This category of Tawheed was the main object of the Dawah of all Prophets, from the first to the last of them. Allah says:

“To every community We sent a messenger: "Worship God, and avoid idolatry…”{An-Nahl:36}

Due to the importance of this branch of Islamic Monotheism (Tawheed), many Scholars wrote on it and also extensively spoke on that. In the forthcoming paragraphs, abrief but concise presentation of the authentic sayngs of Imam Shafi’ee shall be made.

Al-Baihaqi reported on the authority of Rabee’a Ibn Sulaiman that Imam Sha’fi’ee whilst talking about Allah’s Divinity said: “whoever swears by Allah, or anyone of His names, and then breaks his oath shall have to expiate for that, but he who swears by anything other than Allah (though forbidden) and then breaks his oath should not expiate for his oath.” ( Manaaqib As-Shaafi’iyya)

Ibn Qayyim reported in Ijtimaa Al-Juyush  on the authority of Imam Shafi’ee that he said: “the sunnah which I am upon and which I saw our companions upon; the people of hadith from whom I took knowledge from such as Sufyaan and Maalik and others is to declare the Testimony “ I bear witness there is non- worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger, and that Allah; the Most High is upon His throne high above, He comes close to His creations as He wishes , and that Allah; The Most High descends to the lowest heaven as He wishes” (Ijtima Juyush Islamiyya/ the Gathering of Islamic Soldiers by Ibn Al-Qayyim)

 Imam Shafi’ee wrote in his book (Ar-Risaala) “ All praises are due to Allah.. Who is as He described Himself, and above how His creation describe Him) (Ar-Risaala; pp: 7-8)
