Praise be to Allah, the Lord of Creations, and Peace and blessings be upon our prophet Muhammad, the faithful and the honest.

Islam is a holistic religion that covers all aspects of life. It deals with spiritual, emotional and physical needs equally. In the pre-Islamic era there were good and bad practices among  people. When Islam came, it approved good practices and detested those bad ones.

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "I was sent to perfect good character." (Sahih Al-Albani)

One of the practices endorsed by Islam is plucking the armpit hairs. Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "There are five acts which conform to the pure nature: Circumcision, removing of the pubic hair, clipping the nails, plucking the underarm hair and trimming the moustache."  Sahih [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Also, Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "There are ten demands of pure nature: trimming the moustache, letting the beard grow, using Miswak (tooth-stick), snuffing up water into the nose (in ablution), paring the nails, washing the bases of the finger joints; plucking the underarm hair, removing of the pubic hair and removing impurities with water from the affected part after a call of nature."

The subnarrator said: I forgot the tenth but it might possibly be the rinsing of the mouth (in ablution). [Muslim].

The best way to remove armpit hair according to Sunnah is plucking. However, it can be removed in any other way for those who cannot bear the pain, because the purpose is cleanliness.

Younus Ibn Abdul ‘Aalaa said: “I approached Ash-Shaafi’ and he had somebody shaving his underarm and so Ash-Shaafi’ said: I learnt that the Sunnah is plucking but I cannot bear the pain.”

An-Nawawi also said: “The best is to pluck if you have the strength and it can also be done with shaving or liming” and Ibn Qudaamah agreed with him.

It is Mustahabb to remove underarm hair every Friday, or once a week, according to the Hanafi, Maliki, and Ahmad.

It was also said that there is no specific time, but must be removed when needed, because it varies from one person to another. according to the words of Shafi'i. However, it is not permissible to leave the hair more than forty days.

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said: "We were given a time limit with regard to trimming the mustache, shaving the pubic hairs, plucking the armpit hairs and clipping the nails. We were not to leave that for more than forty days." (Sahih /Darussalam).

And Allah Knows the best.
