Prayer Time

All praise belongs to Allah, the One, the First, the Singular, the Independent – He who neither begets nor is begotten, and there is none like unto Him. O Allah, grant Your peace and blessings upon Muhammad and upon his family, companions, followers and supporters.

Allah Almighty says:

"فَهَلْ عَسَيْتُمْ إِن تَوَلَّيْتُمْ أَن تُفْسِدُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَتُقَطِّعُوا أَرْحَامَكُمْ" (محمد: 22)

Translation: " Would you then if you were given the authority, do mischief in the land, and sever your ties of kinship?" (47: 22)

Below are some reflections on this verse:

First, upholding ties of kinship is of the greatest acts of worship that bring a Muslim closer to Allah. It achieves social cohesion and keeps cooperation and love among Muslims. In this verse, Allah warns us against cutting off the ties of kinship. The words of the Quran in many other verses and the authentic traditions of Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon him, have mentioned the punishment that awaits for those who sever the ties of kinship. It is a major sin because it causes Allah's curse, and prevents from entering Paradise on the Hereafter.

This is clearly stated in the Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him when he said:

"Allah created the universe, and when He had finished, kinship (al-rahm) stood up and said, “This is the standing up of one who seeks Your protection from being cut off.” Allaah said, “Yes, would it please you if I were to take care of those who take care of you and cut off those who cut you off?” It said, “Of course.” Allaah said, “Then your prayer in granted.”’” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Recite, if you wish (interpretation of the meaning): ‘Would you then, if you were given the authority, do mischief in the land, and sever your ties of kinship? Such are they whom Allaah has cursed, so that He has made them deaf and blinded their sight.’ [Muhammad 47:22-23].” (Saheeh Muslim).

He Also said:"The one who severs the ties of kinship will not enter Paradise.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

On other hand, upholding ties of kinship is a source for extending life and increasing wealth. The Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him said:

“He who wishes to have his earnings grow (and be blessed) and his term of life prolonged, he should keep ties with his kin” (Sahih Al-Bukhari).

Second, Allah Almighty has combined corruption in the land and cutting off ties of kinship in other  verses in the Quran to indicate the relationship between them. Cutting off ties of kinship is one of the aspects of corruption in the land; it hardens the heart of the  one who severs the ties of kinship over time, so it becomes easy for him to wrong the closest people to him, "blood relatives," as his  father, mother, uncle, brother, etc., then it is easier for him to wrong the furthest people. Thus, this is an aspect of corruption in the land " wronging people ". Allah Almighty says in other verses:

"وَالَّذِينَ يَنقُضُونَ عَهْدَ اللَّهِ مِن بَعْدِ مِيثَاقِهِ وَيَقْطَعُونَ مَا أَمَرَ اللَّهُ بِهِ أَن يُوصَلَ وَيُفْسِدُونَ فِي الأَرْضِ أُوْلَئِكَ لَهُمُ اللَّعْنَةُ وَلَهُمْ سُوءُ الدَّارِ " (سورة الرعد:25)

interpretation of the meaning: “And those who break the Covenant of Allah, after its ratification, and sever that which Allaah has commanded to be joined (i.e., they sever the bond of kinship and are not good to their relatives), and work mischief in the land, on them is the curse (i.e., they will be far away from Allah’s Mercy); And for them is the unhappy (evil) home (i.e., Hell).” [13:25]

"الَّذِينَ يَنقُضُونَ عَهْدَ اللَّهِ مِن بَعْدِ مِيثَاقِهِ وَيَقْطَعُونَ مَا أَمَرَ اللَّهُ بِهِ أَن يُوصَلَ وَيُفْسِدُونَ فِي الأَرْضِ أُوْلَئِكَ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ" (سورة البقرة:27)

interpretation of the meaning: "Those who break Allah´s Covenant after it is ratified, and who sunder what Allah Has ordered to be joined, and do mischief on earth: These cause loss (only) to themselves." [2: 27]

May Allah bless us with honorable and elevated manners, and protect us from harmful and evil manners. We seek refuge with Allah from the evil of our own souls and the evil of our actions.
