Praise be to Allah, the Lord of Creations, and Peace and blessings be upon our prophet Muhammad, the faithful and the honest.

Islam is a holistic religion that covers all aspects of life. It deals with Spiritual, emotional and physical needs equally. An important aspect of religion that must be observed is the Islamic code of dress for both men and women.

Islam has no fixed standard as to the style of dress or type of clothing that Muslims must wear as long as such clothing serves the required purposes without exceeding the bounds set by Islam in this respect. However, according to the Quran and the Hadith or traditions of the Prophet Muhammad, some guidelines on Islamic dress must be adhered to:

-      The dress must cover Awrah (the private parts of body for both men and women), following the instinct of modesty in all human beings, as the Almighty says:

" يَا بَنِي آدَمَ قَدْ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمْ لِبَاسًا يُوَارِي سَوْآتِكُمْ وَرِيشًا ۖ وَلِبَاسُ التَّقْوَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ ۚ " (الأعراف:26)

Translation: "O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best"

This includes being broad, loose, especially women, in order to protect the body and preserve the society from moral corruption. Therefore, it is haraam (prohibited) to wear skin-tight or see-through clothes in Islam. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:" There are two types of people who will be punished in Hell and whom I have not seen: … and women who will be dressed but appear to be naked…"

-      For men, white clothes are fine and likeable. The purity and beauty of this color befits the dignity and honor of man. Ibn `Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: I heard Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying, "Put on white clothes because they are the best; and use them for shrouding your dead.'' (Grade: Hasan Sahih)

-      It is haraam to wear what is similar to men for women and what is similar to women for men. This prohibition is very stern as such a manner of dress comes in the category of major sins and has been cursed by the Prophet (peace be upon him). It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas: that the Prophet cursed men who imitate women and woman who imitate men. (Sahih)

Men and women should stick to their natural qualities and characteristics and strictly avoid imitating the opposite sex in clothes, whether in design or color.

-      Clothes made of silk or adorned with gold are forbidden for men in Islam, due to its aspect of of adornment and beautification which is peculiar to women alone and not befitting to characteristics of men such as bravery, strength and fearlessness.

It was narrated that ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar said:

“The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came out to us, and in one of his hands was a garment of silk and in the other was some gold. He said: ‘These are forbidden to the males of my nation and permitted to the females.’ (Sahih).

Also, Umar bin Al-Khattab (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "Do not wear silk (clothes). For whoever wears (them) in this life will be deprived of them in the Hereafter.'' [Sahih and agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

-      It is haraam to intentionally wear clothes that, out of pride and arrogance, hang loose below the ankles or drag along the ground. Such an act contradicts the humility which Islam aims to develop in a Muslim's lifem and this is borne out by the saying of Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him):

"Whoever leaves(valuable) dress out of humility to Allah while he is able to (afford it), Allah will call him before the heads of creation on the Day of Judgement so that he can chose whichever Hulal (garment) of faith he wishes to wear" (Hasan).

Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him), commenting on the last hadith,  said: "To adopt humility and not to assert superiority over others, according to this Hadith, is an excellent act with Allah. `The clothes of Iman imply those special clothes of Jannah that Allah has prepared for sincere believers only."  (Riyad Al-Saliheen)

However, it should be noted that women are commanded to cover themselves completely down to their feet.

Ibn `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will not look at the one who trails his lower garment out of arrogance.'' Umm Salamah (May Allah be pleased with her) asked: "What should women do with the hem of their clothes?'' He (peace be upon him) said, "They might lower them a hand's span.'' She said: "But their feet would still remain exposed.'' He said, "Let them lower those equal to arm's length but not more than that.'' (Hasan Sahih)

-      Extravagance and wasting money on clothing and all aspect of life are prohibited in Islam.

Allah Almighty says:

" يَا بَنِي آدَمَ خُذُوا زِينَتَكُمْ عِندَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا وَلَا تُسْرِفُوا ۚ إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِفِين" (الأعراف:31)

Translation: " O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess." (7:31)
