Prayer Time

  |      |      |   The Message of Islam:

Praises and thanks are due and belongs to Allah, and may His peace and blessings be upon the holy Prophet Muhammad, his family and all companions.

Supererogatory fast has great rewards and completes the reductions and mistakes committed in the obligatory fast. The overall wisdom behind the institutionalization of  fasting in general is the attainment of taqwa (piety).

Akin to that, non-obligatory fasting entitles a servant the closeness to Allah and winning His pleasure. In a hadith Qudsi, Abu Huraira may Allah be pleased with him relates that the Messenger of Allah may the peace and blessings of  Allah of be upon him said:

“Allah, the Exalted said… “Whoever takes a Wali of Mine an enemy, I will wage war against him; and My slave will not perform any act with which he draws closer to Me, more beloved to Me then when he fulfills what I have ordained on him; and My salve will keep drawing closer to Me by performing the Nawafil (voluntary acts of worship) until I love him, and when I love him, I will be his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hands with which he strikes, and his legs with which he walks; and if he asks Me, I will give him; and if he seeks refuge with Me, I will grant him refuge”. [Saheeh Bukhari].

The voluntary acts of worship comprise supererogatory fasting and all other voluntary acts of worship.

Among the wisdoms of supererogatory fasting is that it helps protect the limbs from committing acts of disobedience. The Prophet peace be upon him prescribed it as the therapy for those who do not possess the financial capability for marriage. Fasting submerges the strong sexual urge of young people and brings it under control until they are able to marry. The Prophet may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him said:

“O young men, whoever among you can afford it, let him get married, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze and guarding one’s chastity. And whoever cannot afford it should fast, for it will be a shield for him.”  (Agreed upon)

Supererogatory fast such as the fast on Mondays and Thursdays entitles one the forgiveness of sins and the reward for acting according to the Sunnah of the Prophet peace be upon him. the wisdom behind the fast of these two days as mentioned by the Prophet peace be upon him is that the deeds of the servants are presented to Allah on Mondays and Thursdays and that he wished that his deeds are presented to Allah whilst he is observing a fast, he-peace be upon him-said:

Deeds are shown (to Allaah) on Mondays and Thursdays, and I like my deeds to be shown when I am fasting.”(At-Tirmidhi)

There are many legal types of supererogatory fast in the lunar year of the Islamic calendar starting with the six days of the month of Shawwal , the Monday and Thursday fast of every week, the monthly three days fast of the 13th, 14th,and 15th of the lunar month, the first days of the month of hajj, the day of Arafat , the day of Ashoura and many more. They all help the Muslim to continue to refresh his faith, self -control and self-discipline and above all prepare him for the obligatory fast of Ramadan. They comes with enormous rewards and great spiritual benefits leading to the creation of ideal servitude towards the Almighty Creator; Allah the Mightiest and the Greatest.
