The Effects of Intercession on the Life of Individuals and the Society

There are so many effects of Intercession among people, some of them are good effects, such as the positive intercession i.e the intercession that has benefit for people and is not done at the expense of others. And some of them are bad effects, such as the intercession that is harmful to others, even though it has benefits for some people, but that is at the expense of others. In the coming paragraphs we shall be discussing some of these positive and negative effects both on the individual and the society.

 

 

Firstly: The Positive Effects:

1/ It is one of the greatest positions, degrees, and the most beneficial, such as the great intercession Allah will grant our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on the day of resurrection. May Allah grant us the opportunity to benefit from it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

[أُعْطِيتُ خَمْسًا لَمْ يُعْطَهُنَّ أَحَدٌ قَبْلِي نُصِرْتُ بِالرُّعْبِ مَسِيرَةَ شَهْرٍ وَجُعِلَتْ لِيَ الأَرْضُ مَسْجِدًا وَطَهُورًا فَأَيْنَمَا أَدْرَكَ الرَّجُلَ مِنْ أُمَّتِي الصَّلاَةُ يُصَلِّي وَأُعْطِيتُ الشَّفَاعَةَ وَلَمْ يُعْطَ نَبِيٌّ قَبْلِي وَبُعِثْتُ إِلَى النَّاسِ كَافَّةً وَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ يُبْعَثُ إِلَى قَوْمِهِ خَاصَّةً ].

 [I have been given five things that were not given to anyone before me: I have been supported with fear being struck into the hearts of my enemy for a distance of one month's travel; the earth has been made a place of prostration and a means of purification for me, so wherever a man of my Ummah is when the time for prayer comes, let him pray; I have been given the intercession which was not given to any Prophet before me; and I have been sent to all of mankind whereas the Prophets before me were sent to their own people] ( Sunan an-Nasa'i 432). He mentioned the "The Shafa'ah" among the five things. which is known as the greatest intercession ever.

2/ There are benefits in mediation for the people, and anything that benefits people without any harm falling on  others is required by shariah. That's why the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) urged for good intercessions by saying:

[اشفعوا تؤجروا ويقضي الله على لسان نبيه ما أحب‏].

[Intercede on behalf of others, you will be rewarded, and Allah will decree on the tongue of His Prophet what He likes]. (Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim).

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said:

[مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَنْفَعَ أَخَاهُ فَلْيَفْعَلْ].

 [He who has the ability to benefit others should do so]. (Sahih Muslim 2199).

3/ It contributes to the delivery of goodness to others, the realization of the right, and the wiping of falsehood. There are so many oppressed people who cannot get their rights except by seeking mediation.

4/ It also makes people happy, as it also connects the hearts together, and give the  intercessor will earn the love of those who he interceded for.

5/ It leads to prosperity and development in the society, where people live as one body helping each other. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

[مثل المؤمنين في توادهم وتراحمهم وتعاطفهم، مثل الجسد إذا اشتكى منه عضو تداعى له سائر الجسد بالسهر والحمى].

[The example of the believers in their mutual kindness, compassion and sympathy is just like a whole body if any part of it got ill, the rest of the body will be affected with fever and lack of sleep].  (Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim).

 

 

Secondly: The Negative effects:

1/ Some mediations are done on falsehood, which is forbidden by the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to Osama bin Zaid:

[أتشفع في حد من حدود الله‏؟‏‏]

[Do you dare to intercede in matters prescribed by Allah? ...].  (Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim).

2/ That the bad mediation is harmful, especially the mediations in which some people are helped to harm others or at the expense of others. This is forbidden by shariah.

3/ The bad intercession disseminates corruption and causes chaos in the society, and the consumption of people's wealth in vain, especially those intercessions that are based on bribery. Allah says in the Qur'an:

{وَلَا تَأْكُلُوا أَمْوَالَكُم بَيْنَكُم بِالْبَاطِلِ وَتُدْلُوا بِهَا إِلَى الْحُكَّامِ لِتَأْكُلُوا فَرِيقًا مِّنْ أَمْوَالِ النَّاسِ بِالْإِثْمِ وَأَنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ}. (البقرة: 188).

Interpretation of the meaning: {And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful]}. ( Quran 2:188).

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

[لَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى الرَّاشِي وَالْمُرْتَشِي].

[The curse of Allah is upon the one who offers a bribe and the one who takes it.]. (Sunan Ibn Majah 2313).

This indicates that it is unlawful(haram) to consume people's wealth with falsehood and bribery. And anything that leads to them carries their judgment because anything that the forbidden will not be completed except by it, is also forbidden, and anything that leaving the forbidden will not be achieved except by leaving it, then, leaving it is compulsory and doing it is forbidden.

4/ That it causes hatred and antagonism among people in the society. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade that when he said:

[لا تباغضوا، ولا تحاسدوا ولا تدابروا، ولا تقاطعوا، وكونوا عباد الله إخوانًا، ولا يحل لمسلم أن يهجر أخاه فوق ثلاث].

[Do not envy one another, nor hate, nor enmity; and do not cut ties/relations with one another and become as fellow brothers and slaves of Allah. It is not lawful for a Muslim to avoid speaking to his brother more than three days].(Agreed upon by Al- Bukhari, and Muslim).

5/ Because the mediation for a non-deserving person at the expense of the deserving, especially in the field of work is injustice to those who are entitled to it, and it is injustice also to the leaders of the society by depriving them the work of the competent, his services to them, his help to them in developing the facilities of life, and aggression against the nation by depriving it those who can do its work perfectly, and fulfill it affairs the best way. Then it nevertheless generates grudges, misconceptions and corruptions in the society.

These are some of the good and bad effects of intercession/mediation. It appears from the above that the Shari'ah did not ignore this issue, but took great interest in it.
