The third issue: The desirable Ghusl(Ritual bathing).

The obligatory ghusl had been discussed, but the supererogatory and desirable ghusl are:

1. Ghusl after every sexual intercourse, because of Hadith of Abi Raafi' who said:

[كان ذات ليلة يغتسل عند هذه وعند هذه قال: فقلت يا رسول الله ألا تجعله واحداً؟ قال: هذا أزكى وأطيب وأطهر].

[One day the Prophet(peace be upon him) took a bath after having intercourse with each one of them. I said to him: "O Messenger of Allah, why don't you make it a single bath? He replied: This is more purer, better and cleaning]. (Recorded by Abu Dawood, No:216, and Ibn Maajah, No:316).

2. Ghusl on Friday(for Jumu'ah prayer), because of his saying(peace be upon him):

[إذا جاء أحدكم الجمعة فليغتسل].

[When any one of you wants to come for Jumu'ah prayer, let him perform ghusl]. (Recorded by Al-Bukhaari, No:877). And this is the most desirable Ghusl.

3. Ghusl for the two E'id prayers.

4. Ghusl when one intending to assume Ihram for Umrah, and Hajj, for the fact that the prophet(peace be upon him) made Ghusl when he intended to assume Ihram.

5. Ghusl for washing the deceased, because of his saying(peace be upon him):

[من غَسَّلَ ميتاً فليغتسل].

[Whoever washes a dead person should take a bath (thereafter)]. (Recorded by Ibn Maajah, No:1463).

The Fourth Issue: The resulting rulings on whom Ghusl is obligatory.

The resulting rulings on that can be summed up in the following:

1. It is not permissible for him to stay in the mosque except for a passerby, because of His saying:

{…And those in a state of Janabah, except those passing through (a place of prayer) until you have performed Ghusl…}. (Qur'an 4:43).

If he performs ablution, it is permissible for him to stay in the Mosque, because this has been proven from a number of companions(may Allah be pleased with them all) at the time of the prophet(peace be upon him), and because ablution lightens Hadath(ritual impurity), and it is one of the two cleansing materials.

2. It is not permissible for him to touch the Mushaf, because of His saying:

{لَا يَمَسُّهُ إِلَّا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ}.

{None touch it(the Holy Qur'an} except the purified}. (Quran56:79).

And because of the prophet’s saying(peace be upon him):

[لا يمس المصحف إلا طاهر].

[None touch the Mushaf except the pure]. (Recorded by Malik in the Muwwata, No:468, and Al-Haakim in the Al-Mustdraak, 3/485).

3. It is not permissible for him to recite the Qur'an. The one in a state of Janabah(ritual impurity) must not recite anything from the Qur'an until he performs Ghusl, for the Hadith reported from Ali(may Allah be pleased with him) who said:

[كان عليه الصلاة والسلام لا يمنعه من قراءة القرآن شيء إلا الجنابة].

[Nothing prevents the prophet(peace be upon him) from reading the Qur'an except Janabah]. (Musnad Ahmad, No:1014).

And because forbidding him from reciting the Qur'an urges him on hastening Ghusl, and removing the obstacle that prevent him from reading the Qur'an.

It is also forbidden to him:

4. Prayer.

5. and circumambulation round the Ka'bah. This has been explained when talking about the issue (things that necessitate ablution) in chapter five.
