The concept of Dhikr.

Dhikr of Allah is the most excellent act of Allah’s servants and is stressed over a hundred times in the Holy Qur’an. It is the most praiseworthy work to earn Allah’s pleasure, the most effective weapon to overcome the enemy, and the most deserving of deeds in reward.

Dhikr is to get rid of heedlessness and forgetfulness. (Madaarij As-salikeen,2/451). Ar-raaghib said:" Dhikr is sometimes mentioned and is meant to be the state of the soul by which a person can preserve the knowledge he possesses, and sometimes the presence of something is represented by the heart, or saying, and that is why they say: dhikr is of two types; dhikr by heart, and dhikr by tongue. (Al-mufradaat,179).

The position of Dhikr:

Ibn al-Qayyim explained the status of dhikr and its importance by saying: It is the status of the great people from which they are get prepared, and in which they get in trade, and to it they are always faltering. It is the spirit of all good deeds, any deed that is devoid of dhikr will eventually become a body without soul. (Madaarij As-salikeen,2/440-441).

The mindful heart is like the living in the homes of the living, and the heedless [heart] is like the dead in the homes of the dead - for there is no doubt that the bodies of the heedless are graves for their hearts, and that the hearts within them are like the dead in their graves.

By holding strictly to the remembrance of Allah, a Muslim actually gains in his life the biggest means of communication between him and his Lord. The implication of this act is that whenever such a person calls his Lord he would be answered and his request would be easily granted.

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Remembrance of Allah is His greatest door which is always open between Allah and His servant, provided the servant does not close it with his negligence and inattention". (Madaarij As-salikeen).

Finally, If this is the magnitude of dhikr, no wonder that the Almighty Allah Has made its existence inevitable in every good deed. There is nothing a Muslim can do, no form of worship, hoping to get reward on it from Allah the Almighty except that the dhikr will be the condition of its perfectness and acceptance. Rather, all deeds have been legally commanded for the establishment of dhikr.

Allah (Exalted He) says:

{إِنَّنِي أَنَا اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنَا فَاعْبُدْنِي وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ لِذِكْرِي}.

{Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance}. (Ta ha: 14).

In short, remembering Allah is one of the virtuous acts of worship through which one can achieve tranquility, rest and peace of mind and heart. May Allah gives us the strength to do Dhikr regularly and can get Allah Almighty blessings. Ameen!
