Ruling on the Farewell Tawaaf upon the Pilgrim.

I used to compel those who perform Umrah to do the farewell Tawaaf when they are about to leave the sacred land. And I have heard from your Eminence in your lesson at the haram that there is no farewell for Umrah. Please give more clarification on this topic.

The farewell Tawaaf is compulsory on the one who performed Hajj, based on the saying of Ibn Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that: "the people were ordered that they should bid farewell to the Ka'abah before leaving, except that the woman who is on her menses was pardoned". (This narration was Agreed upon).

And based on the hadith reported by Ibn Abbas saying:

[The people were going in all directions, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "No one should depart until the last thing he does is (Tawaf around) the House."]. (Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 25, Hadith 3070). This is an order for the pilgrims based on the situation, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said it when the Hajj was completed as a direction for the Pilgrims.

As for the one who performed Umrah, he is not compelled to do the farewell Tawaaf, but it is permissible for him to do it before traveling, because there is no evidence that makes it obligatory, and because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not do farewell Tawaaf when he was leaving Makkah after the Umrah of al-Qada' (make-up), as far as we know from his Sunnah on that.

To Allah belong all success. May Allah's peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
